The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has visited the Ghana Armed Forces’ Headquarters at Burma Camp, Accra to interact with the officers on the need to promote and safeguard our democracy as part of its annual Constitution Week Celebration. The engagement this year with the Armed Forces was amazing with the introduction of a quiz segment to test the civic and constitutional knowledge of officers of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The theme for this year’s celebration is 'Together We Can Build Ghana, So Get Involved'.
The Director of Education of the Ghana Armed-Forces, Colonel Michel Borbi, in his open address, described the celebration as relevant. This, he said, would refresh the knowledge of the Constitution and re-echo the role of the Ghana Armed Forces in maintaining and sustaining peace and order in Ghana, especially with this year being an election year.
Colonel Michel Borbi, stated that the 1992 Constitution of Ghana is the supreme law of the land, adding that it needs to be protected and upheld at all costs. He appealed to citizens to be actively involved and work together to make giant strides in our democratic journey.
The Director General-Defence Civilian Establishment of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Anita Asmah, in her closing remarks congratulated all officers present and for distinguishing themselves by answering correctly almost all questions on civics and the 1992 Constitution. She commended the NCCE for its continuous civic engagements with the citizens especially with the Ghana Armed Forces and also urged the Commission to frequently engage the officers.
The NCCE Director of Programmes, Dr. Imurana Mohammed, in his presentation highlighted the functions and mandate of the Commission to the officers enumerating the Commission’s proposed activities for the 2024 elections. He said these activities included courtesy calls on political parties and state institutions and eminent personalities, matters of concern to the Ghanaian Voter, Presidential and Parliamentary debates, Interfaith Dialogue meetings, media engagements, jingles on the general election, and Human Billboard activities among others.
Dr. Imurana Mohammed condemned the monetisation of Ghana’s elections, and the threat of fake news, misinformation and disinformation on the internet. He stated that in Ghana, Muslims and Christians had lived in harmony and peace and therefore implored citizens not to allow politics to tear down the beautiful relationship between Muslims and Christians.
