NCCE calls for unity and peaceful elections in Accra Zongo

The Chairman of the NCCE, Ms. Kathleen Addy has urged the youth in Accra Zongo to steer clear of electoral violence ahead of the upcoming elections. In her address, Ms. Addy emphasized the irreplaceable value of life, warning that no political outcome is worth bloodshed. "If your life is lost, it cannot be replaced, whether your party candidate wins or loses. The need to spill blood simply cannot be tolerated in this year’s general election." she cautioned.

The political accountability programme organised in partnership with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), sought to educate the youth on responsible electoral participation. The Senior Election Specialist of IFES, Mr. Gilbert Sam highlighted the importance of addressing the issue of money in politics, which often leads to practices like vote buying. He encouraged the youth to rise against such corrupt practices, stressing the need for free and fair elections.

NCCE’s Deputy Chairman of Operations, Mr. Samuel Akuamoah, echoed these sentiments, calling on the youth to familiarize themselves with the electoral rules and regulations. He stressed that adhering to these rules would prevent friction and violent activities, ensuring a peaceful voting process. "Elections have their own rules, learning to follow them will help prevent any unnecessary conflict," he said.

Local leaders present at the engagement also lent their voices to the call for peace. Assemblyman for Korley Wonko Electoral Area, Honourable Peter Quaye emphasized on the need for unity and cooperation during the election period.

The event underscored the critical role young people play in maintaining peace and stability during elections, reminding them that their actions will help shape the future of Ghana’s democracy.
