Ga West NCCE Marks World Environment Day with Climate Action Education at OPAH MA Basic School 1

As part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and raise awareness about climate change, the Ga West Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) commemorated World Environment Day 2026 with pupils of OPAH MA Basic School 1 on Wednesday, 10th June 2026.

The educational programme was held under the global theme, “Climate Action,” and the slogan, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” The engagement sought to educate pupils on the importance of environmental protection and the critical role citizens play in safeguarding the environment for present and future generations.

Addressing the pupils, officials of the Commission highlighted the growing threat posed by climate change and emphasized the need for collective action to protect natural resources and promote sustainable environmental practices. The learners were educated on how human activities such as indiscriminate waste disposal, pollution, deforestation, and poor environmental management contribute to environmental degradation and climate-related challenges.

As part of its constitutional mandate, the NCCE used the occasion to create awareness of Article 41(k) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which enjoins every citizen to protect and safeguard the environment. The pupils were reminded that environmental protection is not solely the responsibility of government institutions but a civic duty that requires the active participation of all citizens, including children.

Speaking during the programme, Mr. Joseph Madjoub and Ms. Evelyn Aniakwa encouraged the learners to adopt environmentally responsible behaviours in their daily lives. They stressed the importance of proper waste disposal, tree planting, water conservation, and the prevention of environmental pollution as practical measures that can help mitigate the effects of climate change.

The facilitators further explained that maintaining clean surroundings, conserving natural resources, and protecting the environment contribute significantly to public health, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development. They urged the pupils to become conscious of the impact of their actions on the environment and to make choices that support environmental sustainability.

Transitioning from awareness to action, the resource persons encouraged the learners to serve as climate champions and ambassadors of environmental protection within their homes, schools, and communities. They noted that young people have an important role to play in influencing positive environmental practices and inspiring others to protect the environment.

The interactive session provided pupils with the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas on how they can contribute to environmental conservation. The discussions enhanced their understanding of climate change and reinforced the importance of individual and collective responsibility in addressing environmental challenges.

The programme successfully increased awareness of climate action and environmental stewardship among the pupils while strengthening their appreciation of the constitutional obligation to protect and safeguard the environment. It also reaffirmed the NCCE's commitment to promoting civic responsibility and sustainable development through public education.
