NCCE’S CECs VISIT THE GARU DISTRICT POLICE STATION AND THE DISTRICT COURT.

The Garu District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr. Akolgo Samuel has advised in-school youth to take an interest in not only studying the 1992 Constitution of the Republic but also understanding it. Mr. Aklogo gave this advice when he led Civic Education Club (CEC) members of the Garu Sumaduri Junior High School to the District Police Service and Court. He said the visit by the Commission’s CEC forms part of efforts to equip the pupils with knowledge about the operations of these two institutions.

The District Police Commander; Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Daniel Yaro who took them through the operation and structure of the Ghana Police Service explained that its mandate was to prevent, detect crime, apprehend, and prosecute offenders. He added that their role was also to maintain law and order and protect the life and property of the people.

DSP Yaro encouraged the students to study hard and be law-abiding citizens admonishing them to report any abuse or violation of the law to the police service. He emphasized that students should remain calm and call the security emergency numbers including 999, 18555, and 112 whenever there is an alarming issue.

The Garu District Court Judge, Mr. Thomas Boadi Soyori, outlined the operation of the Judiciary saying that the Judiciary is the branch of government given authority to interpret, apply, and enforce the laws. He mentioned that, in Ghana, the Judiciary is divided into two sections: the Superior Courts of Judicature, and lower-level courts or tribunals.

Mr. Soyori explained that the Superior Courts of Judicature are outlined in the Ghanaian Constitution to be the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, and the High Court and Regional Tribunals. He said that the lower-level courts and tribunals have no formal constitutional structure saying that these are established on a case-by-case basis by Parliament.
