As part of its ongoing commitment to fostering peace and countering radicalization, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the North Gonja District organized a seminar for young people from border communities. Held on October 30, 2024, at the Assembly of God Church in Daboya, this engagement was funded by the European Union (EU) under the theme “Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE) Action in Northern Ghana.”
Savannah Regional NCCE Director, Mr. Issahaka Zitor, called on youth groups to actively collaborate with the NCCE in the fight against extremism, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and peaceful coexistence. He also encouraged the youth to approach the upcoming December 7th elections thoughtfully, advising them to vote based on party manifestos rather than financial incentives.
“Your thumb is your power, so don’t vote for money. Listen to the manifesto of political parties and make a decision before going to vote,” he stated.
North Gonja NCCE Director, Matthew Duute, highlighted community engagement as a critical tool to counter violent extremism.
“By engaging communities in prevention efforts, we can build stronger, more resilient societies and reduce the risk of violence and extremism. As part of our efforts to prevent violent extremism, we can develop community outreach programs, youth engagement and mentorship, interfaith dialogue initiatives, conflict resolution and mediation, social media campaigns, and community-based social services,” Mr. Duute said.
