Nkonya Ahenkro, April 02, GNA – Mr Kenneth Kponor, Volta Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) on Tuesday said civic education clubs were not political platforms and must therefore not be used as such.
He said the clubs, established by the NCCE were to help effective participation of the citizenry in the development of society, and that it was important for members to manage the clubs clear of political activities.
Mr Kponor gave the caution when he inaugurated Civic Education clubs at Nkonya Ahenkro in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region.
The Director said civic clubs were a flagship programme of the Commission using education and social activities for the proper understanding of civic responsibilities, and also the concept of rule of law and accountability.
He charged members to actively educate the citizens on the Constitution which detailed their rights, duties, and responsibilities, adding that the NCCE would nurture the clubs to transform their communities.
Mr. Kponor said a major responsibility of the clubs was to help fight corruption and encouraged more members of the community to join.A community club of 20 members was formed in Nkonya Ahenkro, the District capital, whiles a joint club with a total of 23 members was constituted for the Nkonya Nchumuru, and Nkonya Kadjebi communities.
Rev Leonard Agblomasa, District Director of the Commission said teenage pregnancy was a pressing issue in the District, and that the clubs must help address the canker by promoting discipline and self-worth among the youth.
He charged the clubs to also ensure that citizens were sensitised against rape and defilement.
Mr. Yaw Obour who spoke on behalf of Chiefs and elders of Ahenkro, charged members of the clubs to be active in discouraging wrongdoing and said traditional authorities would extend the needed support.
