The Asuogyaman District office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has held its 2024 Parliamentary Candidate’s Dialogue at Akrade Community Center.
The dialogue, which was programmed to host the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) aspiring Member of Parliament, Hon. Thomas Ampem Nyarko, and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) aspiring Member of Parliament, Hon. Pius Enam Hadzide, ended up with only the NPP parliamentary candidate present at the event.
Dignitaries present at the ceremony included Hon. Mavis Opokua Akonnor (Asuogyaman DCE), Mrs. Ophelia Ankrah (Eastern Regional Director, NCCE), Mr. Augustine Bosrotsi (Deputy Eastern Regional Director, NCCE), D/PW Inspector Antoinette Asamoah (Ghana Police Service), Mr. Daniel Siaw (Information Service Department), Nana Awusi Djan (Traditional Authority), Rev. Richard Dzakpasu (IPDC Chairman), Imam Ishmeal (Vice Chairman IPDC), and Mr. Ofori Daniel (GFD President, Asuogyaman branch).
Also in attendance at the occasion where happenings were marked by active citizen participation and sharing of ideas on important local issues of concern were market women, youth groups, supporters of both the NPP and NDC, and the general public.
In his acceptance speech as the Chairman of the occasion, Rev. Richard Dzakpasu clarified the importance of the dialogue and called for fruitful conversation from the constituents about the district.
“No insults when given opportunity to ask questions. Ask questions based on their office and not their persona," he stated.
In the course of the sessions, moderated by Mr. Emmanuel Ayisi, Hon. Pius Hadzide in his response to key concerns captured in the NCCE’s research titled “Matters of Concern to the Ghanaian Voter," asserted how important Education is dear to his heart. He alluded, it is the reason he has given computers and school desks to some schools, including South Senchi D/A, Atimpoku Presby Basic School, among others in the district.
“It saddens my heart that there is no tertiary school in this district. I will make sure the people of Asuogyaman get a tertiary institution when I am elected as the MP for this constituency," he said.
In addition, Hon. Hadzide applauded the NCCE for organising such a dialogue, agreeing to the fact that power belongs to the people, and for that matter, he acknowledging and honouring the invitation to meet his constituents. He further pledged his commitment for peace, emphasising his readiness to accept the election’s result.
Mr. Alexander Boakye Yiadom, the District Director of NCCE for Asuogyaman District, commended the constituents for attending the dialogue and stressed on the importance of safeguarding the peace and stability of the district and the country during the electoral process, which remains a top priority for all stakeholders.
“This is not the end of our work, the NCCE will continue to reach out to people at churches, schools, radio stations, information centres, and other groups with our civic messages and other election-related issues," he said.
