The Akuapem North Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organised an educational tour for the Civic Education Club (CEC) Members of Methodist JHS and Salem Presbyterian JHS at Akropong in the Eastern region.

The Assistant Civic Education Officer (ACEO), Ms. Alberta E. Attipoe, led the CEC members to the Municipal Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), and the Ghana Ambulance Service (NAS) to enlighten them on the operations of these institutions.

Fire Officers, D.O. III Isaac Kumi Oduro and A.D.O. I Yaw Brenya interchangeably revealed to the Club Members that the GNFS is mandated to prevent and manage undesired fires. They said this in turn helps to prevent the loss of lives and property by enforcement of fire safety measures through creating and sustaining awareness of the hazards of fire heightening the role of individuals in the prevention of fire.

They also reiterated that the GNFS provides technical advice for building plans with respect to machinery and structural layouts to facilitate escape from fire, rescue operations, and fire management, as well as inspecting and offering technical advice on fire extinguishers. Additionally, the CEC Members were given the opportunity to observe how the Fire Tender, Fire Extinguisher, and other equipment were used in firefighting.

On the other hand, the Municipal Commander of the Ghana Ambulance Service (NAS), Advanced E.M.T. Jonas Adjanor highlighted the functions of the NAS noting that their roles were not limited to providing pre-hospital emergency care to accident victims such as Road traffic, Domestic, Industrial, Medical etc.

They stated that the NAS transports accident victims from the scene of an incident to an appropriate health facility, provide standby emergency cover at mass public meetings, and liaises with other emergency services in time of disaster or mass casualty incidents. Club members had the chance to witness how emergency victims were treated and transported in the ambulance van.
