NCCE Promotes Constitutional Values Through Inter-Security Services Games in Cape Coast

The Central Regional Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organized its annual Constitution Week Celebration engagement with the security services through an Inter-Security Services Games competition at St. Peter’s Regional Seminary in Cape Coast. The event formed part of activities marking the 2026 Constitution Week Celebration and brought together personnel from various security agencies to promote unity, discipline, teamwork, and responsible citizenship.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Central Regional Director of the NCCE, Madam Mercy Essien, described the games as a unique initiative aimed at commemorating Constitution Week while strengthening collaboration among the security services. Addressing the national Constitution Week theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in the Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility,” Madam Essien stressed that safeguarding Ghana’s constitutional democracy now extends beyond physical spaces into the digital sphere.

She noted that the digital age presents both opportunities and challenges, requiring collective vigilance and responsible conduct from all citizens. According to her, activities carried out online, including what people post, share, endorse, or ignore, can either promote national peace and unity or threaten social cohesion and security.

Madam Essien emphasized that security officers play a critical role not only in protecting communities and national borders but also in upholding integrity, discipline, and lawful conduct necessary for sustaining constitutional order in the digital era. She further observed that the increasing spread of misinformation, disinformation, cybercrime, digital fraud, hate speech, impersonation, and online abuse demands heightened vigilance, professionalism, and responsible digital citizenship. She therefore urged security agencies to continue leading by example by promoting lawful and ethical behaviour both online and offline.

The regional theme for the games, “Teamwork, Discipline and Fair Play for Responsible Digital Citizenship,” highlighted the values needed to encourage responsible engagement in the digital space. Madam Essien explained that sporting activities such as football, volleyball, tug of peace, lime-and-spoon race, and sack race require teamwork, patience, trust, discipline, and respect for rules, qualities that are equally essential for responsible use of digital platforms.

“Just as players are expected to follow the rules governing the games, citizens must also respect the laws governing the use of digital platforms, communication technologies, and online spaces,” she stated. She added that responsible digital conduct remains essential to protecting citizens, preserving public trust, and strengthening constitutional governance in the digital age.

The competition attracted more than 200 personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and Ghana Prisons Service. Participants displayed camaraderie, professionalism, and a shared commitment to national development throughout the event.

The Central Regional Office of the NCCE expressed appreciation to its partners and sponsors, including COA Manufacturing Company, Araba T Ventures, Red Star Mall, Count Your Blessings, and Arizona Ice Mineral Water, for their support towards the successful organization of the programme. At the end of the competition, participating teams received hampers, souvenirs, and other valuable items.

The Ghana Prisons Service emerged winners of the men’s football competition, taking home a trophy and awards donated by sponsors, while the Ghana National Fire Service was crowned overall winner after narrowly edging past the Prisons Service. The Fire Service also received a live goat as a special award in recognition of its overall performance.

The annual Constitution Week Celebration continues to serve as an important platform for strengthening cooperation among the security agencies while promoting constitutionalism, responsible citizenship, and national cohesion. It also reinforces the need for citizens and institutions to uphold discipline, unity, and lawful conduct both offline and online.
