SPEAKER EMPHASIZES CIVIC EDUCATION AS DEMOCRACY'S BACKBONE, CALLS FOR A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

‎Democracy is not sustained by elections alone. While the ballot box remains a cornerstone of governance, true democratic vitality emerges when citizens actively participate in decisions that shape their daily lives. This was the fulcrum of the address of the Speaker of Ghana's Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, at the recently held Press Soirée by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).

‎Delivered in his stead by the Member of Parliament for the people of Daboya/Mankarigu Constituency, who doubles as Chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Hon. Shaibu Mahama, the Rt. Hon. Speaker noted that while the NCCE is constitutionally mandated to educate the citizenry about their rights and responsibilities, civic education cannot rest on its shoulders alone.

‎Highlighting the role of Parliament in Ghana's democracy, he indicated that the legislature, beyond serving as the place for making laws, must be seen as an institution that embodies the will of the people. He implored Ghanaians to show interest in how public funds are utilized, and hold leaders accountable. “The people must see Parliament as their Parliament,” he opined.

‎The Rt. Hon. Speaker further pointed out the crucial role of the media in the democratic ecosystem. According to him, taking into account the speed of digitalization, the media is afforded an unparalleled power to hold leaders accountable while educating the vast populace. He urged them to partner with the NCCE to build a stronger platform for an informed citizenry.

‎The role of traditional and religious leaders was also brought to the fore. Identifying them as critical partners in civic education, the Rt. Hon. Speaker stressed that their voices carry weight in communities, and their involvement can deepen respect for democratic values and strengthen social cohesion.

‎In his last words, Rt. Hon. Bagbin called for civic education to be intensified among the youth to empower them not just as voters but as responsible citizens who understand their civic rights and embrace their role in building Ghana’s future.
