The Youth as a Catalyst for Good Governance

As part of activities aimed at raising awareness of ethical leadership as a catalyst for sustainable development, the Upper East Regional Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) participated in a radio discussion on Blues Waves Radio. The discussion focused on the theme, "Youth Leadership as a Catalyst for Good Governance."

The discussion led by Augustine A. Akugri, the Deputy Region Director of the Commission, emphasized that ethical leadership, transparency, and accountability are indispensable pillars of good democratic governance. Ethical leadership is essential for building public trust and ensuring that public institutions serve the interests of citizens. Although Ghana has established legal and institutional frameworks to promote accountability and integrity, challenges such as corruption, conflicts of interest, influence peddling, and weak adherence to ethical standards continue to undermine democratic governance and national development.

Participants were encouraged to recognise that accountability and respect for the rule of law have become increasingly important in strengthening democracy. The programme called on young people to rise and actively demand transparency, accountability, and integrity from public office holders while demonstrating these same values in their own lives.

The discussion further stressed that the fight against corruption cannot be left solely to government institutions. It requires the active participation of all citizens, particularly the youth, who constitute a significant proportion of Ghana's population. Educating young people on corruption and its effects reinforces the importance of nurturing responsible, informed, and active citizens committed to promoting integrity and good governance.

It was further noted that broad youth participation alone is insufficient. There is a need for deliberate and strategic sensitization to transform young people into peer educators, advocates, and role models within their communities. As emerging leaders, young people have the ability to influence the attitudes, behaviours, and decisions of their peers, thereby creating a multiplier effect that extends far beyond the radio discussion and contributes to building a culture of integrity, responsibility, and accountability.

A clarion call was made for participants to apply the knowledge and lessons gained from the programme in their communities by championing ethical leadership, promoting accountability, and encouraging responsible citizenship. The discussion concluded by reminding participants that the quality of leadership demonstrated by today's youth will determine the strength of the institutions and society of tomorrow. It therefore urged the youth to become leaders who not only demand accountability from others but also hold themselves to the highest standards of ethical conduct, transparency, and integrity.
