NCCE Chair Advocates for Lasting Partnership with the Media to Champion Civic Education

‎Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Ms. Kathleen Addy, has underscored the urgent need for a stronger partnership between the Commission and the media, describing it as vital to Ghana’s democratic consolidation.

‎Addressing the media and other development partners at a Press Soirée convened by the NCCE, Ms. Addy highlighted the media’s unmatched reach and influence in shaping public opinion. She explained that civic education thrives when citizens are consistently informed about their constitutional rights and responsibilities, and the media remains an effective channel to achieve this.

‎She, however, cautioned that information disorder continues to erode trust in institutions and weaken democratic participation. Ms. Addy thus stressed that journalists must embrace their responsibility to ensure accuracy, fairness, and balanced reportage. “The media is not just a conveyor of information; it is a partner in nation‑building,” she stated, adding that civic education in contemporary times can barely achieve much in isolation from the press.

‎The NCCE Chair further intimated that the partnership between the Commission and the media is essential for promoting constitutional awareness, encouraging responsible citizenship, and combating misinformation to protect the integrity of public discourse, which consequently consolidates our democratic gains.

‎She concluded with a call to media practitioners to see themselves as allies of civic educators, stressing that the success of Ghana’s democracy depends on a united front between institutions that inform and those that educate.
