The Birim South District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in collaboration with the Organisation of International Missionaries (OIM)-Ghana and Women Unveiled Ministries (WUM)-USA, a Christian mission trip organization has supported female pupils of Awisa Methodist School, Presby JHS, Swedru St. Agartha’s Girls and Presby JHS with sanitary pads. The gesture forms part of a series of activities under the OIM/WUM project to sensitise female pupils on menstrual hygiene and teenage pregnancy.
The Birim South District of the NCCE, Mr. Yaw Somuah, expressed gratitude for the collaboration and urged the female pupils to see menstruation as part of their lives and not feel shy about it. He encouraged the young girls to change their sanitary pads regularly as well as have their baths. He also advised them to ensure they discard their pads appropriately after use and always wipe from the front to the back anytime they visit the washroom to avoid any form of infection.
The leader of the WUM- USA, Mrs. Erika Etienne admonished the female pupils to know their menstrual cycle and keep themselves clean when menstruating. She also took the teenagers through the dangers of teenage pregnancy and advised them to engage themselves in physical activities or hobbies whenever their hormones are craving such sexual acts. She admonished them to focus on their education to attain greater heights in life.
Speaking on the theme “my period my pride”, a member of the missionary, Ms. Kieara Harris and entreated the pupils to abstain from all forms of sexually related activities. “Getting pregnant as a teenager or being a teenage father delays one’s dreams and aspirations”, she added.
