The Akatsi North District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has marked the 2026 Constitution Week Celebration with a series of public education engagements aimed at deepening constitutional awareness and promoting responsible citizenship.
The engagements were held under the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in a Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility.” They focused on strengthening citizens’ understanding of Ghana’s democratic values, constitutional duties, and the responsible use of digital and social media platforms.
Speaking during the sessions, Civic Educator Ms. Portia Quarshie stressed that the 1992 Constitution remains the foundation of Ghana’s democracy, peace, and national development. She urged citizens to respect the rule of law, promote national unity, and conduct themselves responsibly both offline and online.
Ms. Quarshie cautioned participants against misinformation, cyberbullying, hate speech, and other forms of online abuse that could undermine social cohesion and violate the rights of others. She encouraged them to verify information before sharing and to use digital platforms to promote truth, tolerance, civic awareness, and national development.
The outreach targeted identifiable groups, including apprentices and their masters, market women, and members of the Okada Riders Association. The participants were taken through their rights and responsibilities as citizens, with emphasis on the need to uphold the Constitution in their daily activities. They were encouraged to be law-abiding, tolerant of divergent views, respectful in their communication, and mindful of how their actions, both online and offline, affect peace, social cohesion, and national development.
Some participants expressed appreciation to the NCCE for extending the Constitution Week education to their groups, noting that the engagement had improved their understanding of the Constitution and the need to use digital platforms responsibly. The exercise formed part of the Commission’s mandate to promote constitutional literacy, active citizenship, and democratic participation across all sectors of society, while reminding citizens that the protection of Ghana’s democracy is a shared responsibility.
