Constitution Week Celebration: NCCE Assin Foso and GRA Educate Churches on Tax Compliance

The Assin Foso Office of the National Commission for Civic Education, in collaboration with the Ghana Revenue Authority, has engaged six churches on tax compliance, civic responsibility, and the need for citizens to contribute to national development.

The outreach was held on Sunday, 24th May 2026, as part of activities marking the 2026 Constitution Week Celebration under the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in a Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility.” The beneficiary churches were the Pentecost Church, Apostolic Church, House of Faith, Holy Family Catholic Church, Calvary Methodist Church, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Officials from the Ghana Revenue Authority, Mr. Thomas Coffie and Madam Grace Boabeng, took the congregation through practical education on the use of the tax portal for tax payment. They also explained issues relating to tax returns, tax reliefs, the benefits of honouring tax obligations, and the consequences of non-compliance.

Madam Grace Boabeng explained that the Ghana Revenue Authority is responsible for tax administration and revenue mobilisation for the state. She noted that failure to comply with tax obligations could attract sanctions, including penalties and other legal consequences under Ghana’s revenue laws.

Speaking during the engagement, Madam Adabiyatu Balali Iddrisu of the NCCE reminded the congregations that tax payment is a constitutional duty. She referred to Article 41(j) of the 1992 Constitution, which enjoins citizens to declare their income honestly to the appropriate and lawful agencies and satisfy all tax obligations.

She further explained that taxes are an important source of public revenue and help the government to provide essential services and development projects, including roads, schools, health facilities, sanitation systems, and other public infrastructure. She therefore urged members of the congregations to see tax payment not only as a legal requirement but also as a civic responsibility that supports national progress.

Other NCCE staff present at the outreach included Madam Yvonne Fosu, Mr. Amoah Bismak, and Madam Theresa Avoka. Together with the GRA officials, they encouraged citizens to comply with tax laws, use approved payment platforms, seek clarification where necessary, and avoid practices that undermine revenue mobilisation.

The congregations expressed appreciation to the NCCE and the Ghana Revenue Authority for the education, describing the engagement as important and timely. They also welcomed the opportunity to better understand their tax obligations and the role of taxes in promoting development.
