Western Regional NCCE Marks Constitution Day with Media Engagements

The Western Regional Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has commemorated the 2026 Constitution Day with a series of visits to some media houses in the region, underscoring the importance of civic responsibility and active participation in Ghana’s democracy.

Constitution Day, observed on the 7th of January every year, is a day set aside to put a spotlight on Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, with the 2026 edition marking the 33rd anniversary of this supreme legal framework that ushered in the Fourth Republic.

Touching on the Commission’s 2026 operational theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in a Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility”, the officials highlighted the enduring principles enshrined in the Constitution, including the supremacy of the 1992 Constitution as well as the values of freedom, justice, accountability, and the rule of law.

During the engagement, it was apparent that these values remain the bedrock of Ghana’s democracy and must be protected, particularly in an era where digital platforms shape public discourse.

Residents were thus urged to move beyond passive observation to actively engaging in civic and developmental discussions affecting the region, because although the Western Region shares in the national democratic experience, it faces unique developmental challenges.

Citizens were further encouraged to build digital literacy and harness opportunities in the digital space for regional growth, emphasizing the need to monitor government budget allocations for developmental projects.

They were, however, cautioned against misinformation, disinformation, and excessive politicking that undermine democracy. Rather, they should prioritize tolerance and constructive dialogue in addressing regional issues.

Meanwhile, the Directorate announced plans by the Commission to intensify public education on the work of the Constitutional Review Committee, calling for optimum civic participation and reiterating that democracy remains Ghana’s best shot at a governance system.
