VOTER EDUCATION IS CRITICAL IN NATIONAL ELECTIONS- CHIEF JUSTICE ANIN YEBOAH

The NCCE has met with the Judiciary as part of the Commission's stakeholder consultations ahead of this year's elections. The role of the Judiciary is critical in peacebuilding, especially in an election year. The Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Anin Yeboah, Justice Nene Amegatcher, and Justice Agnes Dordzie interacted with the Chairman of NCCE and her team. Justice Anin Yeboah said when it comes to national elections the Judiciary's role is limited to the adjudication of electoral disputes. As he puts it, "We can not educate like the NCCE, we can only hold ourselves in readiness to hear cases on electoral disputes. We are prepared for any electoral related cases. So we urge the NCCE to also intensify voter education for peaceful, transparent, free and fair elections". The Chief Justice mentioned that the Service will organise training for selected judges who will sit on electoral disputes that will be presented to the service.

The Chairman of NCCE, Ms. Josephine Nkrumah highlighted the Commission's activities for the 2020 elections. She mentioned among other Presidential and Parliamentary debates, the launch of research on Matters of Concern to the Ghanaian Voter, Inter-Party Dialogue Committee, Education on violent extremism, and general voter education. Commission Member Mrs. Hajara Rufai Mohammed, Mr. Ebenezer Ampaabeng, Acting Director of Television at of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, and other Commission officials were at the meeting.
