NCCE Urges Citizens to Maintain Fairness Towards Others

The Garu Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Upper East Region engaged the Garu Community Day Senior High School (SHS). Over two hundred (200) students were sensitized on core national values such as peaceful coexistence, and national cohesion as well as the District Level Elections (DLEs).

The District Director, Mr Akolgo Samuel explained that national cohesion is unity, inclusiveness, social integration, shared identity, common values, and a feeling of belonging among diverse groups within a country. National cohesion creates an inclusive and cohesive society where citizens embrace diversity, uphold shared values, and actively participate in building a harmonious nation. He said that the essence of national cohesion lies in promoting a shared identity, common values, social solidarity, respect for diversity, effective communication, social justice, and inclusive citizenship.

He encouraged participants to be well-informed about the 1992 Constitution, enabling citizens to actively participate in the democratic processes and uphold the principles and values enshrined in it as well as its significance in governing the duties, rights, and responsibilities of its citizens as enshrined in Chapters 5 and 6 of the Constitution.

Speaking on participation in local governance, he emphasized that Article 42 states that every citizen of Ghana of eighteen years of age or above and of sound mind has the right to vote and is entitled to be registered as a voter for the purposes of public elections and referenda. He also made mention of Article 248.

Finally, Mr Akolgo encouraged the students to be clothed in their identity as Ghanaians and to be guided accordingly. He said nationalism and patriotism must be the guiding principles of a united people breaking barriers to develop. He admonished all eligible voters to turn out massively on 19th December 2023 to elect assembly members and unit committee members through a peaceful, free, fair, transparent, and credible electoral process.

Other resource persons were Mr. Jonas Ayamba Asitang, a National Service Personnel (NSP), and Mr. Sandow Abugri (Civic Field Officer).
