The North East Regional Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organized a civic engagement programme for students of the College of Nursing and Midwifery, Nalerigu, to promote awareness on the rule of law and the fight against corruption.
Held on 23rd April 2026, the programme focused on the theme, “Rule of Law and the Fight Against Corruption,” and formed part of the Commission’s efforts to encourage accountability, ethical conduct, and responsible citizenship among the youth, especially future healthcare professionals.
Leading the engagement, the Deputy Regional Director of the NCCE, Mr. Gariba Sato, underscored the importance of integrity and professionalism in public service. He noted that corruption continues to undermine national development, weaken institutions, and erode public confidence in governance systems.
Participants were taken through topics such as corruption, conflict of interest, and influence peddling by facilitators including the North East Regional Officer of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Mr. Sulley Sawyer, and Mr. Yussif Abdul Rahaman of the NCCE. The facilitators explained how unethical practices negatively affect service delivery and national progress.
Students were encouraged to uphold transparency, honesty, and accountability in their personal and professional lives, particularly as future healthcare providers entrusted with the welfare of citizens. They were reminded that respecting the rule of law and rejecting corrupt practices are essential to building a fair and resilient society.
Speaking after the session, some participants expressed appreciation to the NCCE for the initiative, stating that the engagement had deepened their understanding of ethical standards and civic responsibility.
As part of the civic message, the NCCE urged citizens to support the fight against corruption by refusing to engage in dishonest practices, reporting wrongdoing through the appropriate channels, and promoting integrity in their communities and workplaces. The Commission further called on the youth to become ambassadors of accountability and patriotism in order to safeguard Ghana’s democratic values and national development.
The engagement formed part of the “Civic Engagements on the Rule of Law and the Fight Against Corruption” under the Participation, Accountability and Integrity for a Resilient Democracy (PAIReD) Programme. The project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-financed by the European Union (EU) and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in collaboration with the NCCE.
