Report on Drug and Substance abuse Sensitization program for Basic Schools in the Sissala West District

The Sissala West District of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the Sissala West Ghana Health Service, organized a sensitization programme on drug and substance abuse for pupils of selected basic schools in the district.

The programme aimed to educate pupils on the dangers of drug and substance abuse, promote healthy lifestyles, and encourage them to make responsible decisions that will positively shape their future.

Participants were educated on commonly abused substances, including alcohol, tramadol, marijuana, energy drinks, and misuse of prescription medicines. Mr Mohammed Sulley, the lead facilitator, and Mr. Nasare Alhassan and Mustapha Iddrisu, the director of NCCE, explained the harmful effects of drug and substance abuse, such as poor academic performance, drug and substance addiction, mental and physical health problems, indiscipline, and violent conduct, among others.

Students were advised to resist peer pressure, avoid experimenting with drugs, and seek guidance from parents, teachers, and health professionals whenever they face challenges. The students were also encouraged to report suspicious drug-related activities to responsible adults and to become ambassadors against drug and substance abuse in their schools and communities.

In conclusion, NCCE and Ghana Health Service reaffirmed their commitment to working together with schools, parents, and community leaders to create a safe, healthy, and drug-free learning environment in the Sisala West District.
