The Dormaa West District office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) with support from the European Union has organised a sensitisation programme on Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE) at the Dormaa District Assembly. The programme targeted the youth in the community.
The officer-in-charge of the Dormaa West District office of the NCCE, Mr. Emmanuel Attah stated that the objective of the programme was to sensitise the youth to be security conscious and to report any suspicious activity to security agencies. Mr. Attah spoke about violent extremism and its effects on the socio-economic development of a nation. He implored the youth to be content with what they had so that extremists would be unable to bait them with their luxurious lifestyle. He inspired the youth to believe in themselves engaging in genuine work for sustenance rather than joining extremist groups.
Inspector Godwin Tekyi admonished the youth to be hardworking and responsible citizens and shun any offer that would perpetrate violence. He mentioned that everyone must be security-conscious and that everyone is equally important in the fight against violent extremism. “If one is tagged to be violent, it will cost that person by denying him opportunities”, he said.
A minister from the Temple of Praise, Nkrankwanta, Rev. Oheneba K. Jonas also entreated the youth to respect and tolerate the rights of others. He emphasized that tolerance is a critical factor in national cohesion and peace-building. He advised the participants to be patriotic adding that without peace, there wouldn’t be unity.
The District Coordinating Director, Mr. Iddrisu Mahama, said that participants should try and resolve issues amicably and speak for the voiceless to show empathy.
