NCCE, EU and Coginta Ghana Launch EUSEG Project to Strengthen Information Sharing and Community Resilience Against Violent Extremism

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the European Union (EU) and Coginta Ghana, has commenced the first batch of an information-sharing workshop under the European Union for Secure Ghana (EUSEG) Project to strengthen peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and the prevention of violent extremism (PVE) in Ghana. The workshop, held on 20th July 2026 at the RADACH Hotel in Tamale, brought together District Directors of the NCCE, Regional Accountants, and Programme Officers from the Northern, North East, and Savannah Regions.

The workshop forms part of the implementation strategy of the European Union-funded project, which is being implemented in partnership with Coginta Ghana and the NCCE. The initiative seeks to enhance institutional capacity and strengthen collaboration among key stakeholders in addressing emerging security challenges and promoting sustainable peace.

Building on the successes and lessons of previous European Union-supported initiatives, particularly the PEACE PROTECT Project, the EUSEG Project aims to consolidate proven community-based approaches that strengthen community resilience and promote inclusive conflict prevention. The project focuses on Ghana's five northern regions—Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East, and Upper West—where challenges such as chieftaincy and land disputes, farmer-herder conflicts, youth vulnerability, and cross-border insecurity continue to threaten peace and stability.

Opening the workshop, the Deputy Chairman of the NCCE in charge of General Services, Mr. Victor Brobbey, underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration among state institutions, traditional authorities, civil society organizations, and local communities to effectively address emerging security concerns and sustain peace.

The workshop was attended by senior officials from the NCCE Headquarters, including the Director of Programmes, Dr. Imurana Mohammed; the Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation, Mrs. Henrietta Asante Sarpong; the Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs, Miss Rita Amparbin; the Northern Regional Director, Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed; and the NCCE/EUSEG Project Accountant, Mr. Christian Aboagye.

Throughout the workshop, participants received presentations on the objectives, expected outcomes, and implementation strategies of the EUSEG Project. Discussions focused on strengthening Ghana's peace architecture through support for the National and Regional Peace Councils, the establishment of Local Peace Councils, and the consolidation of Local Peace Committees and Peace Centers to improve conflict prevention mechanisms at the community level.

Speaking during the workshop, the Operations Manager of Coginta Ghana, Mr. Vitus Domevi Yerewere, outlined the organization's role in hotspot validation exercises and strategic planning with Regional Public Coordinating Bodies. He emphasized the need to strengthen public awareness and community-security dialogue through NCCE-led civic education programmes and stakeholder engagements.

The NCCE/EUSEG Project Manager, Mr. Patrick Asare Nelson, also highlighted the project's key interventions, including civic education campaigns, media outreach, community dialogues, youth and women-focused initiatives, monitoring and evaluation activities, and the deployment of cinema vans to promote peacebuilding and prevent violent extremism. He disclosed that the project officially commenced on 1st May 2026 and is expected to run for 34 months with funding from the European Union.

Additionally, Chief Ibrahim Seidu delivered presentations on terrorism, extremist narratives, and the legal frameworks for preventing and countering violent extremism. The Registrar of the Mamprugu Traditional Council, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, also emphasized the critical role of traditional authorities in mediation, land governance, conflict resolution, and strengthening community resilience.

The workshop reaffirmed the commitment of the NCCE and its partners to promoting peaceful coexistence, strengthening institutional collaboration, and empowering communities to prevent conflict and violent extremism across northern Ghana.
