Members of the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (GHABA), Sekondi Zone, have been encouraged to train their children and apprentices in vocational and entrepreneurial skills to promote self-employment and contribute to national development.
The call was made during a meeting of the Association held at its office, where national development was discussed as the main topic.
Addressing the members, Madam Enyonam Blekotse stressed that although formal education remained important, parents should complement it by equipping their children with the vocational and entrepreneurial skills they had acquired.
She urged members not to encourage young people to depend solely on government employment after completing their education, but rather to consider self-employment as a viable means of creating jobs and earning a sustainable income.
Madam Blekotse explained that self-employment provided young people with opportunities to establish their own businesses, generate income, and contribute to economic growth.
She further noted that economically empowered citizens were better positioned to fulfil their civic responsibilities, including the payment of taxes, which contribute to national development.
She therefore called for deliberate efforts to promote skills training among the youth as a means of reducing unemployment and creating opportunities for young people to become economically independent.
The members were also encouraged to take skills development seriously and serve as agents of positive change within their communities.
