East Gonja NCCE Empowers Pupils on Responsible Digital Citizenship During Citizenship Week

As part of activities marking the 2026 Citizenship Week Celebration, the East Gonja Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) successfully engaged pupils of Immamiya Primary School, Saedia Islamic Primary School, and Iddrisiya Primary School in an educational outreach programme aimed at promoting responsible digital citizenship among young learners.

The engagement formed part of the Commission's efforts to educate children on the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in the Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility,” and the sub-theme, “Growing Up Digital: The Ghanaian Child Upholding the Constitution Online.”

Addressing the pupils, NCCE officials emphasized the growing role of digital technology in the lives of children and the importance of using digital platforms safely and responsibly. The learners were taken through interactive sessions designed to equip them with practical knowledge on how to navigate the online space while protecting themselves from potential risks.

Particular attention was given to online safety, where pupils were educated on the importance of safeguarding their personal information and exercising caution when interacting with people online. They were advised not to share sensitive details such as passwords, home addresses, or personal photographs with strangers and were encouraged to seek guidance from parents, teachers, or trusted adults whenever they encounter suspicious online activities.

The pupils were also sensitized on responsible digital behavior and the need to use technology in ways that promote learning, creativity, and personal development. Facilitators encouraged them to demonstrate respect, honesty, and responsibility in all their online interactions, just as they would in their everyday lives.

Transitioning to the issue of social media and online communication, the learners were advised to think carefully before posting, commenting, or sharing information online. They were reminded that content shared on digital platforms can have lasting consequences and should therefore be accurate, respectful, and appropriate.

The facilitators further stressed the importance of verifying information before sharing it to help curb the spread of misinformation and falsehoods. Pupils were encouraged to become responsible digital citizens who contribute positively to creating a safe, respectful, and informed online community.

The interactive nature of the programme provided learners with the opportunity to ask questions and share their experiences regarding the use of digital devices and online platforms. Through these discussions, the pupils gained a deeper understanding of their responsibilities as young citizens in the digital age.

The outreach programme successfully enhanced the pupils' awareness of online safety, responsible internet use, and digital citizenship, reinforcing the importance of upholding constitutional values both offline and online.

The East Gonja Municipal Directorate of NCCE remains committed to nurturing informed, responsible, and conscientious young citizens capable of making positive contributions to their communities and the nation at large.
