As part of activities marking the 2026 Citizenship Week Celebration, the National Commission for Civic Education engaged pupils of Kpembe M/A Primary School on responsible digital citizenship and safe use of digital platforms.
The educational engagement was held on 28th May 2026 and focused on raising awareness among pupils about the dangers associated with cyberbullying, misinformation, disinformation, and other harmful online behaviours. The programme sought to help the learners understand that the use of mobile phones, computers, tablets, and social media comes with responsibilities that must guide their conduct.
Addressing the pupils, Mr. Alidu Ibrahim, Civic Education Officer, explained that digital platforms can be useful for learning, communication, creativity, and access to information when used responsibly. He, however, cautioned that the internet can also expose children to risks when they use it carelessly or without proper guidance.
Mr. Ibrahim advised the pupils to refrain from insulting, threatening, mocking, or spreading harmful messages about others online. He explained that such actions amount to cyberbullying and can affect the confidence, emotional wellbeing, dignity, and academic performance of victims.
He further encouraged the learners to report incidents of cyberbullying to their parents, teachers, guardians, or trusted adults whenever they occur. According to him, children must not remain silent when they experience or witness online abuse, but should seek help early to prevent further harm.
The pupils were also educated on the dangers of misinformation and disinformation. Mr. Ibrahim urged them to verify information before sharing and to avoid forwarding messages, pictures, videos, or stories whose sources they cannot confirm. He reminded them that false information can create fear, confusion, mistrust, and unnecessary tension in society.
The engagement reinforced the importance of using technology ethically, respectfully, and safely. Pupils were encouraged to protect their personal information, respect the rights and dignity of others online, and use digital platforms to promote learning, peace, and positive interaction.
The Citizenship Week Celebration serves as an important platform for promoting civic values, responsible citizenship, and positive behavioural change among young people. The engagement at Kpembe M/A Primary School therefore formed part of the NCCE’s broader effort to nurture informed and responsible young citizens in the digital age.
The programme ended with a call on pupils to uphold good online conduct, verify information before sharing, report harmful behaviour, and contribute to creating a safe, respectful, and responsible digital environment for all.
