Ghanaians have been urged to protect the Fourth Republican Constitution by upholding their civic responsibilities and using digital platforms in ways that promote peace, truth, tolerance, and respect for the rights of others.
This call was made by Mr. Awal Iddrisu of the National Commission for Civic Education during a radio engagement on Ultimate FM 106.9 in Kumasi on Thursday, 21st May 2026. The discussion was held on the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in a Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility.”
Speaking during the programme, Mr. Iddrisu said the Fourth Republican Constitution has served Ghana for thirty-three uninterrupted years, making it an important foundation for the country’s democratic stability, peace, and national development. He stressed that citizens must not take this achievement for granted, but must actively defend the Constitution through responsible conduct.
He explained that protecting the Constitution goes beyond knowing one’s rights. It also requires citizens to perform their duties faithfully, respect democratic institutions, obey the laws of the country, and contribute to the common good.
Referring to Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution, Mr. Iddrisu reminded listeners that good citizenship requires citizens to uphold and defend the Constitution, obey the laws of the country, pay their taxes, contribute to the wellbeing of their communities, protect public property, and cooperate with lawful agencies in maintaining law and order.
He further stated that in the digital age, civic responsibility also includes how citizens conduct themselves online. Mr. Iddrisu cautioned the public against using social media and other digital platforms to spread false information, insults, hate speech, and content that could harm others or undermine national cohesion.
Mr. Iddrisu urged citizens to respect the rights and dignity of others on digital platforms and to share only information that is true, harmless, and necessary. He emphasised that freedom of expression must be exercised with responsibility, tolerance, and respect for the law.
He encouraged Ghanaians to see the defence of the Fourth Republican Constitution as a shared duty and to use both offline and online spaces to promote responsible citizenship, national unity, and democratic development.
