The Jirapa Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education took its Constitution Week public education drive to Gangaa 94.3 FM, engaging residents of the municipality on the need to protect Ghana’s democracy in the digital age.
The radio discussion was guided by the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in a Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility.” It provided an opportunity for officers of the Commission to speak directly to listeners on how constitutional values must shape citizens’ conduct, not only in their homes, workplaces, and communities, but also on social media and other digital platforms.
During the broadcast, listeners were reminded that the digital space has become a powerful arena for public conversation, civic participation, and information sharing. However, officers cautioned that when misused, the same space can become a channel for misinformation, intolerance, abuse of freedoms, and content that threatens unity and public trust.
The discussion encouraged residents to treat responsible digital behaviour as an act of patriotism. Officers urged the public to verify information before sharing, avoid inflammatory comments, respect opposing views, and use online platforms to promote peace, discipline, truth, and national cohesion.
Special attention was also given to the role of young people in protecting constitutional democracy. The youth were encouraged to download and study the soft copy of the 1992 Constitution so they can better understand their rights, duties, and responsibilities as citizens.
According to the Commission, constitutional knowledge will help young people resist manipulation, reject misinformation, and stand against all forms of constitutional abuse. They were further urged to become responsible voices online by promoting democratic values, peaceful dialogue, and respect for the laws of Ghana.
The engagement reinforced the message that safeguarding the Constitution is a shared duty. In the digital age, the NCCE noted, citizens must be as responsible online as they are expected to be in physical spaces.
