The NCCE has engaged pupils of the Kaneshie Presbyterian Preparatory School on the theme, “Our democracy, Ghanaian values in practice: The role of the child”.
The event is part of its Annual Citizenship Week activities. As one of the NCCE’s flagship programmes and its mandate in Article 233 (d), the officers from the Head Office sought to inculcate in the students, a sense of awareness of the roles they can play in contributing to Ghana’s democracy.
A total of five hundred and twenty (520) pupils were engaged, two hundred and eighty-six (286) boys and two hundred and thirty-four (234) girls with twelve (12) teachers. Officers from the NCCE were Ms. Lucy Marie Danso (Deputy Director, Estates Unit) who was the resource person for the day.
Ms. Danso explained to the pupils, the essence of celebrating Citizenship Week every year stating that Ghana’s young citizens must not lose our values and that’s what this year’s citizenship week engagements seek to achieve. We need to groom responsible citizens who can promote effective nation-building.
Ms. Danso emphasized on values of nationalism, integrity, discipline, respect, and truthfulness among others encouraged pupils to embrace these values. The pupils were urged to dispose of their waste materials in bins, protect public property, and obey school authorities. She advised pupils to stay away from illicit drugs like cocaine, smoking, and alcohol and avoid tipping people off to do a bad deed for them. This, she mentioned is how corruption starts.
Questions raised by some pupils included organisations responsible for dealing with child abuse cases, what to do if there’s no dustbin in sight, whether there is occurrence of corruption in Ghana and what the government is doing about illegal mining.
The headmaster of the school, Mr. Eric Asamani expressed gratitude to the team for the insight shared and pledged to put all the values into practice. Copies of the 1992 Constitution were presented to the school.
