The commissioner of police (COP) Oppong Boanuh, Director General of Administration, said nepotism and negative cultural practices that encourage corruption must not be encouraged. He said, in order to eschew corrupt practices, form the Police Service, the service must be properly resourced to carry out its work effectively. He stressed that when the institution is strengthened, the measure will be put in place to curb the corruption menace.
Ms. Josephine Nkrumah, responding to questions posed at the encounter said, the NCCE will collaborate with the Ghana Police Service to educate the public on the roles and procedures of the Ghana Police Service. She reiterated that when values are instilled in the citizenry they tend to be disciplined and shun all for corrupt practices. She was of the view that Ghana stands to retrogress if the Ghanaians values are not restored to check social vices in the country.
She noted that the role of the Police under the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) is to enforce the law so if the Police are perceived to be corrupt, citizens will lose faith in the Police and take the law in their hands. She said the NCCE in collaboration with the European Union (EU) had rolled out an Anti-corruption, Rule of Law and Accountability Programme (ARAP) to curb corruption. Ms. Josephine Nkrumah further stressed that when civic-mindedness is instilled in citizens it reduces the workload on the Police in the effective delivery of their mandate.
