The National Commission for Civic Education, (NCCE) has begun sensitising students at various tertiary institutions in the Upper East Region on strategies and measures to prevent and contain violent extremism in the country.
The initiative according to the commission aimed to draw knowledge as well as equip students on the strategies to deploy when coming into contact with extremists at their various schools or communities.
It said the initiative came to light after the commission’s 2021 and 2023 reports indicated that all the factors that are influencing violent extremism in the neighbouring countries were equally present in the country.
“As a commission, we cannot say we have records of extremism in the region or country yet, but we cannot also deny the fact that we are not a step closer to such either. Because if you look at our 2021 and 2023 reports, all the factors (corruption, economic woes, and unequal distribution of resources) that are fueling such activities in our neighbouring countries like Burkina Faso and others are the same here in the country.”
Given that, the commission chaired by the Upper East Regional Director, Mawuli Agbenu indicated that five tertiary institutions have been targeted to benefit from the initiative.
“In the region, Upper East, tertiary institutions such as CKT UTAS, Bolgatanga Technical University, Bolgatanga Midwifery Training College, Gbewaa Teacher Training College, and Zuarungu Nursing Training College. The reason is that these students need to have the requisite knowledge on violent extremism and how to prevent and contain such when coming into contact with people of such.”
Mr. Agbenu called on participants, especially students at the Zuarungu Nursing Training College, to extend the knowledge gained to colleagues in their various communities.
