Archbishop Porter “A” JHS, Sekondi emerged winners of the Interfaith Shaping Hearts, Attitudes and Mindset to End (I-SHAME) Corruption in Ghana debate held in the western region. The National Catholic Secretariat (NCS) partnered the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to create awareness on the evils and effects of corruption among the Ghanaian youth using quizzes, debates, discussions, and essay competitions to nib the canker in the bud.
The debate was on the topic “What is corruption? Is Ghana losing the fight against corruption?”. The debate was between Archbishop Porter “A” JHS who spoke against the motion that “Ghana is not losing the fight against corruption and Effiakuma M/A JHS supported the motion that “Ghana is losing the fight against corruption”.
The Western Regional Director of NCCE, Mr. Alphonsus Arthur, delivering the welcome remarks explained that the debate was part of the Commission’s anti-corruption activities to help reduce corruption to the barest minimum in Ghana. Mr. Arthur emphasized that the programme sought to encourage the youth to eschew all forms of corrupt acts and the public in general to have a cause to fight against corruption.
He highlighted that the National Anti – Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) is the home-grown strategy for fighting corruption, therefore, the I-SHAME Corruption in Ghana Project would go away to augment the efforts of NACAP in the fight against corruption in Ghana.
Mr. Zan Akologo, the representative of the National Catholic Secretariat, stated that the I-Shame Corruption in Ghana project is an anti-corruption attitudinal change building process that targets the youth by imparting knowledge on corruption and its effects on citizens and the country as a whole.
At the end of the competition, Arcbishop Porter “A” JHS, Sekondi, garnered twenty-five
- points whilst Effiakuma M/A JHS, Effiakuma also had fifteen (15) points. They were awarded cash prizes of One Hundred and Fifty Ghana Ghana cedis (GH₵ 150.00) and One Hundred Ghana cedis (GH₵ 100.00) respectively.
