NCCE and CHRAJ Educate Presbyterian SHTS Students on Child Abuse Prevention and Reporting

‎The Akuapem North Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in collaboration with the Municipal Office of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), on Wednesday, 21st January 2026, organised a sensitisation programme on child abuse for students of Presbyterian Senior High Technical School, Larteh.

‎‎The engagement aimed to raise awareness on the various forms of child abuse and educate students on prevention and reporting mechanisms.

‎‎Speaking during the programme, Ms. Portia Hlovor of the NCCE educated students on the different forms of child abuse and how they occur in schools, homes, communities, and online spaces. She highlighted issues such as violent discipline, neglect, unequal treatment of children, exploitation, harmful cultural practices, peer pressure, and the negative effects these practices have on children’s development and academic performance.

‎‎Ms. Rachel Amiko, an officer from CHRAJ, sensitised the students on available channels for reporting child abuse. These include school authorities, guidance and counselling units, parents, CHRAJ offices, Social Welfare offices, the Police, NCCE offices, and other child protection institutions. She further assured students of confidentiality and emphasised the protection of survivors from stigma and retaliation when cases are reported.

‎Mr. Eric K. Ocloo of the NCCE underscored the critical role boys and men play in preventing child abuse. He encouraged students to challenge harmful social norms, promote respect and equality, speak up against abuse, and act as positive role models within their homes, schools, and communities.

‎In concluding the programme, Mr. Eric K. Ocloo and Ms. Portia Hlovor introduced the Civic Education Club (CEC) to the students. They explained the aims and objectives of the Club, its organisational structure, and the strategies for achieving its goals. The school authorities and students welcomed the initiative and proposed an alternative date for the establishment of the Club and the election of its executives.
