Yendi NCCE Intensifies Public Education on Sanitation and Proper Waste Disposal

The Yendi Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has intensified public education on environmental sanitation and proper waste disposal through street broadcasts targeted at market women, traders and residents.

Focused on keeping gutters and drainage systems clear during the rainy season, the sensitization exercise encouraged community members to adopt responsible waste management practices to help prevent flooding and protect public health.

Leading the announcements, Mr. Yakubu M. Baba, Assistant Civic Education Officer at the Yendi Municipal Office, urged traders and residents to use designated waste bins, reduce littering and avoid dumping refuse into gutters and open spaces. He explained that careless waste disposal blocks drains, creates stagnant water, contributes to flooding, and exposes communities to diseases.

Messages delivered during the broadcast emphasized simple but important actions residents can take to maintain a clean environment. These included regular cleaning of surroundings, proper disposal of plastic waste, reduced use of single-use plastics, and active participation in community clean-up exercises.

Market women and residents welcomed the sensitization exercise and noted that the message would help improve sanitation practices in the market and surrounding communities. Some participants also acknowledged the need for consistent public education to remind residents of their responsibility in keeping the municipality clean.

NCCE staff called for stronger collaboration among market associations, the Municipal Assembly, sanitation authorities, and community members to sustain good sanitation practices. They also encouraged traders and residents to support practical measures such as on-site demonstrations and the provision of accessible waste disposal facilities in market areas.

Similar street broadcasts are expected to continue in other parts of Yendi as part of efforts to promote cleaner communities, reduce flooding risks and strengthen civic responsibility during the rainy season.
