The engagement and civic responsibility during a radio sensitization programme organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Yendi Municipal Office, as part of its second-quarter activities.

The engagement, which was aired on Sankara Radio Station, sought to educate residents of the municipality on the importance of fulfilling their tax obligations and the role taxation plays in supporting the country's socio-economic development. The programme forms part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to promote responsible citizenship and support government initiatives aimed at strengthening domestic revenue mobilization.

Leading the discussion was the Municipal Director of the NCCE Yendi, Mr. Osman Kassim, who served as the resource person for the programme. He explained that taxes remain one of the most important sources of revenue for the government and are essential for the provision of critical public services such as education, healthcare, security, and infrastructure development.

According to Mr. Kassim, every citizen has a civic responsibility to contribute to national development through the payment of taxes. He emphasized that tax compliance not only supports government programmes and projects but also helps improve the quality of life of citizens by ensuring the continuous delivery of essential services.

Furthermore, he encouraged traders, business operators, and residents within the municipality to voluntarily comply with tax regulations and fulfil their obligations promptly. He advised members of the public who may have concerns or questions regarding tax procedures to seek clarification from the appropriate revenue authorities rather than relying on inaccurate information from unofficial sources.

Mr. Kassim also highlighted some of the key challenges affecting tax compliance, including misinformation, inadequate public awareness, and negative perceptions surrounding taxation. He noted that these challenges often discourage individuals and businesses from meeting their tax obligations, thereby affecting government revenue generation.

To address these concerns, he underscored the importance of sustained civic education and strategic media engagements in promoting public understanding of taxation and correcting misconceptions. He explained that informed citizens are more likely to appreciate the importance of taxation and willingly comply with tax laws.

The radio discussion provided listeners with valuable insights into the relationship between tax compliance and national development while reinforcing the need for collective responsibility in building a prosperous nation. It also offered an opportunity for the public to better understand their role in supporting government efforts to generate the resources needed for sustainable development.

The programme forms part of the NCCE's constitutional mandate to educate citizens on their civic duties and responsibilities while supporting initiatives that contribute to national growth and development.
