The Kwaebibirim Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Eastern Region has engaged some religious bodies in the municipality. They include the Church of Christ, Christ Apostolic Church Intentional and Ghana Baptist Church (Emmanuel Congregation) all in the Adonkrono community. The engagement forms part of the Commission’s 2023 Constitutional Week Celebration.
The Municipal Director, Mrs. Gertrude A. Defoe facilitated the interaction where the meeting discussed:
- Advantages of Constitutional Rule
- Challenges of Constitutional Rule
- Participation in the Upcoming District Level Elections
This year’s theme for the celebration is ‘‘Thirty Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy: Building National Cohesion through Civic Education and Participation in Local Governance’’. Mrs. Defoe explained Ghana’s constitutional journey to the congregation in all the sessions. She informed the congregation that Ghana’s thirty years of constitutional rule have brought about national and political stability. ‘Politically, the 1992 Constitution has allowed us to elect our preferred leaders into power; socially it has allowed us to join any social group of our choice and economic stability has made resources available for all’, she explained.
Mrs. Defoe however mentioned that the country’s democracy has faced some challenges. She said bribery and corruption; weak state institutions; monetization of politics/vote buying; bad journalism; security threats from ethnic conflicts and neighbouring countries; illegal mining and lack of adequate funds for institutions like the NCCE to educate Ghanaians to appreciate their civic rights and responsibilities as some of the setbacks confronting our constitutional democracy.
On promoting participatory governance, Mrs. Defoe urged the participants to actively get involved in the upcoming district-level elections either by contesting as candidates or rallying community members to vote to elect their local leaders.
