Use social media for learning, not to instigate violence – NCCE Chairman to Youth

The Chairman of the NCCE, Ms. Kathleen Addy, has urged young people to use social media as a tool for learning rather than promoting violence. Speaking at the NCCE/USAID political accountability activity held at the Saviour Presbyterian Church in La-Nkwantanang District, she emphasized the importance of peaceful engagement ahead of the upcoming general elections. The event was organised in partnership with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Ms. Kathleen Addy highlighted the influence of social media on modern-day politics, stressing that it could be harnessed positively to spread knowledge and promote dialogue rather than inciting unrest.

The event also featured the Senior Election Specialist of IFES Ghana, Mr. Gilbert Sam, who praised the NCCE’s efforts in promoting civic responsibility. He further called on the Office of the Special Prosecutor (SOP) to actively prosecute individuals involved in election-related bribery, including vote buying and selling. According to Mr. Sam, tackling such practices is crucial in maintaining the integrity of elections and ensuring democracy is upheld.

The training session was facilitated by Mr. Mawuli Agbenu, Greater Accra Regional Director of the NCCE, who guided participants through key concepts such as misinformation, disinformation, election violence, among others. He stressed on the importance of understanding these issues to help prevent conflicts and ensure that young people contribute to a peaceful electoral process.

The project forms part of NCCE and IFES collaborative efforts to equip Ghana’s youth with the knowledge and tools needed to foster peaceful elections and promote political accountability.
