Tano North Continues Its Education on the District Level Elections

The Tano North Office of the NCCE, Ahafo Region as part of public education to encourage the electorates to take part in the upcoming District Level Elections (DLEs), engaged the citizens of Adrobaa in the Tano North Municipality during the Electoral Commission’s platform mounting for the aspirants contesting the 2023 District Level Elections.

The NCCE Municipal Director, Mr. Joseph Oduro-Buabeng, who addressed the gathering explained the need for the electorates to take the DLEs seriously. He said the District Level Elections is about electing people to represent them at the Tano North Municipal Assembly and the Adrobaa Zonal Council. He again said that the problems in their area can be addressed if they elect competent people who are capable of presenting their problems to the Assembly. He admonished them not to just vote on a partisan basis, because Article 48 of the 1992 Constitution does not allow political parties to endorse, sponsor, or campaign for any candidate contesting in the District Level Elections. He spoke also about the revocation of the mandate of any Assembly Member, per Section 10 of the Local Governance Act 2016 (Act 936). He advised them that if at any point in time, they see that their elected Assembly Member is not performing, they should petition the Electoral Commission for the necessary steps to be taken and followed to remove such member from the Assembly.

Mr. Oduro-Buabeng spoke about the duties of Assembly Members as stated in Section 16 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936). He avers that Assembly members should always establish close contact with the electorates to know their views, opinions, and issues affecting them so that they can present same to the Assembly for redress and also to let the electorates know whatever decision or steps that have been taken by the Assembly to resolve their issues.

In his concluding address, Mr. Joseph Oduro-Buabeng encouraged the citizens to turn out in their numbers to vote so that as a country we can go past the thirty-three percent (33%) recorded during the last District Level Elections in 2019. He said the date for the District Level Elections is 19th December 2023 between 7:00 am – 5:00 pm at every polling station in Ghana.

The Electoral Commission Platform Mounting allowed the electorate to ask the aspiring Assembly Members and the Unit Committee Members questions on what they will do for the communities when they are voted into office.
