Spreading fake news can fuel conflicts

The Greater Accra Regional Office of the NCCE engaged students of Ngleshie Amanfro Technical Institute on information disorder and the dangers of spreading false information in the digital space.

The Deputy Regional Director, Ms. Gloria Kudo, led the discussion, explaining the different forms of information disorder, including misinformation, disinformation, malinformation, and hate speech. She laid emphasis on how fake news or false information can mislead the public, create panic, and fuel conflicts.

Mr. Sharp Owusu, a staff of the Commission, demonstrated practical ways to verify online content and introduced students to fact-checking tools that help distinguish between credible and false information. He encouraged them to think critically before sharing news on social media.

The engagement, funded by the French Embassy, is part of ongoing efforts to promote responsible digital citizenship among students, ensuring they contribute to a more informed and cohesive society. A similar activity was undertaken at the La Presbyterian Senior High School.
