The Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Sekyere East District, as a proactive measure to nurture democratic values among young people, has organised a voter education programme for students of Tomhel School in Effiduase and supervised their prefectorial elections.
The session, which engaged pupils from Basic Three to Junior High School Three, was designed to educate learners on the principles of democratic participation while providing them with practical experience in the electoral process.
In an address, Sekyere East District Director of the NCCE, Michael Boahene, underscored the importance of voting and the need to elect competent, responsible and visionary leaders. He also took participants through the key procedures involved in conducting peaceful, credible and transparent elections.
Meanwhile, the Director also urged the pupils to approach the exercise with a sense of responsibility, reminding them that every vote plays a vital role in determining effective leadership.
Subsequent to the educational session, NCCE officials guided the pupils through each stage of the voting process to ensure fairness, transparency, and orderliness.
Pupils enthusiastically participated in the exercise, casting their votes for various leadership positions, including School Prefect, Compound Prefect, Sports Prefect and Entertainment Prefect.
Beyond selecting school leaders, the election served as an important civic learning platform, giving pupils first-hand experience in civic participation, fairness, accountability and informed decision-making.
School authorities commended the initiative, describing it as an effective way of inculcating civic responsibility and preparing young people to become active and informed citizens.
