REAL COMMITMENT IS NEEDED TO PUT GHANA FIRST-NCCE CHAIR

The Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education, Ms. Kathleen Addy has called on citizens to put Ghana first in all their dealings and express it in their day-to-day activities. Ms. Addy wants citizens to be loyal to Ghana and promote the good name of the country. Ms. Addy made remarks when she visited the E.P Mission School at Anyaniu in the Volta Region as a special guest at Civic Forum organised to mark the 2023 Citizenship Week celebration. The Civic Forum on the theme: "30 Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy: Building National Cohesion through Civic Education: The Role of the Ghanaian Child."

According to Ms. Addy, Ghana will be greater and stronger through national cohesion if citizens respected the views and rights of others and put Ghana first. By calling for greater tolerance among Ghanaians, Ms. Addy implored the citizenry to respect the national symbols such as the National Anthem, the National Pledge, the Ghana Flag, the Coat of Arms, the Ghana Currency and others. She explained that the symbols, “embody our identity as Ghanaians and values as a country”. She charged all citizens of Ghana to defend the 1992 Constitution against all forms of abuse.

Ms. Addy commended the people of Anloga for promoting peace in the area and entreated them to also protect and preserve the environment. She further charged members of the community to report persons whose actions degrade the country’s natural resources, to the relevant law enforcement agencies.

The District Chief Executive of Anloga, Seth Yormewu was elated to receive the Chairperson of the NCCE in the district. He expressed gratitude to the Commission for choosing to engage citizens in his district on civic values and reminded the audience to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and the progress made to sustain it for three decades. “This did not happen by chance, but was the result of dedicated efforts from all segments of society, especially the youth. Since the future of this nation lies in the hands of the youth, there is the need to empower them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and opportunities to actively participate in democratic processes, so that they can contribute meaningfully to our nation's development” he stressed.

He added that Ghana’s 1992 Constitution stands tall as the bedrock of the country’s democracy and it is a living testament to the vision and aspirations of the past generation. He called on all not to forget the sacrifices made to achieve this democratic milestone. Let’s preserve and protect the values enshrined within it”, he concluded.

Present at the event were the Volta Regional Director of the NCCE and his Deputy, the District Director of Education, the Anloga District Police Commander, the District Fire Officer, the District Health Director, traditional authorities, the Presiding Member of the Anloga District Assembly, Assembly Members of the Dzita-Anyanui area and Community Members.
