As part of efforts to engender peaceful cohesion and eschew violence, the National Commission for Civic Education has again called on the youth to be ambassadors in promoting peaceful coexistence and cohesion in the county.
The call was made at Nyanyanor, Kasoa during a Townhall meeting with an appeal for youth groups to dialogue to promote peace and national cohesion as well as encourage active participation of citizens in national development and reduce acts of violence.
The townhall public engagement was organised by the National Commission for Civic Education with support from the Ministry of National Security . The meeting brought together youth groups in the Awutu Senya Municipality.
Alhaji Aliyu Muhammed who is the Deputy Central Regional Director of NCCE advised participants to cherish and contribute towards promoting peace in Ghana. He said, “the peace we enjoy in Ghana should not be taken for granted; for without peace and adequate security, development cannot thrive and the economy will collapse.”
He said the NCCE’s collaboration with the Ministry of National Security seeks to reiterate the need for all and sundry to promote greater peace and help prevent activities of violent extremists in the communities.
With the notoriety of Kasoa perceived as a hot bed of various criminal activities, including land guards attacks, refuge for armed robbers, vigilantism, indiscipline, violent acts of miscreants, as well as increase in number of foreign migrants, the Deputy Director urged landlords to ask relevant questions from potential tenants, especially when dealing with foreign nationals.
He also tasked participants to support the work of the Ministry of National Security and the NCCE by being vigilant in their everyday lives, stressing that “national security is a shared responsibility”. “Keep your ear on the grounds and be observant. Report suspicious characters to the Ghana Police Service” he urged.
Highlighting the NCCE theme for the year 2021: “We Are One, Ghana First”, Alhaji Muhammed encouraged the youth to propagate the message received from the meeting to their peers, “for we are one people, with one goal; to see Ghana develop economically and peacefully,”.
Detective Eric Boakye of the Kasoa District CID Office also urged participants to report any criminal activity or information directly to the offices of the District Commander, Crime Commander or Regional Commander. “Walk into our offices and report all crimes, your safety is assured,” he assured.
Chief Inspector Theophilus Demiah at the Kasoa Under bridge Police Station in his contribution alleged some individuals and government officials or appointees in the municipality often interfere in Police investigations. He added that these actions from leaders often derail justice and embolden criminals to continue their nefarious acts of violence.
The Chairman of the Townhall meeting, Alhaji M.S. Ali, and member of the Kasoa Traditional Council advised participants to help preserve the good name of Kasoa. “Kasoa is developing at a fast pace and we must all help protect the peace and security to improve the economic state here,” he added.
Other participants present at the meeting included representatives of the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, Unit Committee Members from the Assembly offices, Traditional Leaders, members of some Faith Based Organisations and Persons with Disability (PWDs).
