The President National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Mr. Dennis A. L. Ampofo has lauded the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) for its commitment to instill in citizens civic consciousness. Mr. Ampofo gave the commendation when he led a five-member delegation from Erhvervsskolernes ElevOrganisation (EEO) and NUGS to interact with the management of the NCCE on civic education and constitutional matters.
He said that EEO is a Danish corporate institution mandated to protect and ensure a high standard of technical and vocational education in Denmark whiles NUGS works to ensure that the interest of all Ghanaian students both at home and abroad is protected. Mr. Ampofo also expressed gratitude to the Commission for the warm reception.
The Deputy Chairman of NCCE in charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Asare Akuamoah, took the team through the mandate and operations of the Commission, describing the Commission as one of the Independent Governance Institutions provided by the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and created by an act of Parliament. “We are present in all the regions, districts, municipal, and metropolis across the country”, he stated.
He indicated that the Commission’s activities are designed based on thematic areas and flagship programmes. Mr. Akuamoah also mentioned that the essence of the Independent Governance Institutions in Ghana was to ensure effective governance that allows citizens to feel the real benefit of democracy. This, he said was to ensure that all Independent Governance Institutions including the NCCE, Electoral Commission, Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice( CHRAJ), and National Media Commission (NMC) work closely and complement one another. He added, though the Commission is an Independent Governance Institution, the NCCE collaborates with other government institutions, strategic partners, corporate institutions, Civil Society Organisation, and media, among others to execute its constitutional mandate.
In addition, the Deputy Chairman of the NCCE, Finance, and Administration, Lawyer Victory Brobbey said the Commission also uses consultative engagements with stakeholders including the media, religious bodies, political parties, Person Living With Disabilities (PWDs) among others as one of its strategy in delivering effective civic education.
