NCCE SPOTLIGHTS ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION WITH TAILORING AND SEAMSTRESS APPRENTICES IN BAREKESE

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has educated apprentices of the Association of Tailors and Seamstresses in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District in the Ashanti Region on environmental protection and sustainable practices.

The education took place during the association’s monthly meeting at St. Peter’s Catholic Church at Barekese. It aimed to raise awareness of environmental challenges and encourage participants to adopt practices that promote a clean and healthy environment.

The session, led by Ms. Deborah A. Kumi, Assistant Civic Education Officer (ACEO), highlighted the effects of environmental degradation on public health, livelihoods, and community development. Participants were educated on the causes and effects of improper waste disposal, plastic pollution, and illegal mining. They were also encouraged to maintain clean workplaces, dispose of waste responsibly, and adopt sustainable practices in their daily activities. Particular attention was given to waste generated through tailoring and dressmaking.

Ms. Kumi explained that fabric scraps, leftover threads, and other sewing materials could contribute to environmental pollution if not properly managed. She urged the apprentices to practice waste separation, reuse and recycling where possible, and ensure the safe disposal of unwanted materials. These measures, she noted, could help reduce environmental pollution while creating opportunities for innovation and income generation.

The NCCE encouraged the apprentices and members of the association to take responsibility for protecting the environment and serve as environmental ambassadors by sharing the knowledge they had gained with customers, families, and other community members.

The engagement forms part of the Commission’s civic education efforts to promote responsible citizenship and encourage community participation in addressing environmental challenges.
