NCCE IS ONE OF THE IMPORTANT PILLARS OF GHANA'S DEMOCRACY"- RT. HON. BAGBIN DECLARES

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin is convinced that NCCE is an important constitutional body whose work must be prioritised to sustain Ghana’s democracy. Describing the NCCE as 'an important pillar of Ghana's democracy', the Rt. Hon. Speaker decried how over the years the Commission has been neglected and under-resourced to fulfil its Constitutional mandate. The Speaker of Parliament expressed these sentiments when the Chairperson of NCCE, Ms. Kathleen Addy led a delegation from the Commission to pay a courtesy call on him at Parliament House in Accra.

NCCE in the last few months, has been engaging key stakeholders on how the Commission can initiate strategic partnerships with other institutions to support and fulfil its mandate of delivering effective Civic Education to the good people of Ghana.

Ms. Kathleen Addy was warmly received by the Speaker of Parliament. She was delighted with the warm reception and spoke confidently about the progress of work and state of affairs at NCCE as well as some of the challenges faced by the Commission.

Ms. Addy also gave some insights into the new strategic direction of the Commission to intensify Civic engagements. She called on the Parliament of Ghana to partner with the NCCE to make citizens accept and appreciate the concept of democracy. "We are here to explore opportunities for mutual collaboration', she stated.

Ms. Addy was equally unhappy about how the NCCE over the years has been left to feel that it does not matter in Ghana's democratic space even though Civic Educators continue to work in very difficult environments adding that the Commission needs support to help deepen Ghana's democracy.

Rt. Hon Bagbin embraced the call for partnership, 'You have a friend in Parliament. We will always open our doors to you because of the purpose for which the NCCE was established. I support your views on your challenges and I assure you that in the shortest possible time, these challenges will be addressed. We need you more than you need us', he assured.

Present at the meeting was the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Kofi Attor among other officials.

Ms. Kathleen Addy was also accompanied by her two Deputies, Mr. Samuel Asare Akuamoah who is in charge of Operations, Lawyer Victor Borbbey, Finance and Administration, and Senior Management staff.
