NCCE hosts an EU Election expert mission

Management of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has, on behalf of the Commission hosted an Election Expert Mission delegation from the European Union.

Chairing the diplomatic rendezvous was the NCCE Deputy Chairman of Operations, Mr. Samuel Akuamoah, who was flanged by the Deputy Chairman In-charge of General Services, Victor Brobbey Esq., as well as the Commission Secretary, Mrs. Lucille Hullette Annan, together with some Line Directors at the Head Office.

The EU Mission on the other hand was represented by a Political and Electoral Expert, who also served as the team lead, Mr. Mark Stevens who revealed their six-week scheduled stay in Ghana, beyond observation of the 2024 General Election, is to also learn about all the necessary protocols established by the relevant stakeholder institutions, as far as the Elections is concerned.

Mr. Stevens sharing his observation picked on the staggering 60% of new applicants to the 2024 Voter Register entering the register through the guarantor system, which according to him is alarming in this contemporary era. He suggested a more authentic and sophisticated mode of verifying the necessary details of applicants to make the process more robust.

Mr. Akuamoah in his welcome remarks reiterated the Commission’s commitment to sustaining democracy through civic education, which remains its core mandate, adding that the Commission, all year-round, designs and carries out activities in that regard.

Towards the elections, the Deputy Chairman of Operations mentioned NCCE’s engagement with all relevant stakeholders including traditional authorities, Speaker of Parliament, the executive bodies of the various political parties, among others.

Mr. Akuamoah however lamented the lack of cooperation from some state agencies at the national level, who are very pivotal to a successful election outcome. Such dissonance, according to him defeats the synergetic relationship needed to deepen trust in the system among the citizens, which can impact democracy growth.

While acknowledging the immense support of the donor community, he appealed through the EU Mission team lead, Mr. Stevens that they keep up with their interventions, stating, Ghana remains a beacon of democracy in Africa and sustaining that status is crucial for the en bloc peace and stability on the continent, as other sister nations that look up to Ghana.

Mr. Mark Stevens was grateful for the insights and both parties discussed further collaborations in the future.
