NCCE Ellembelle Sensitises the public and Students on Constitutional Duties and Environmental Protection

The Ellembelle District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has sensitised first-year Senior High School students and the general public on citizens’ constitutional duties, with particular emphasis on protecting public property and safeguarding the environment.

The sensitisation was held on the West End Radio 100.3 FM Morning Show at Nkroful. It was led by the Acting Director of the Ellembelle District Office, Mr. Samuel Aibi, with the Principal Civic Education Officer, Mr. Salifu Yaro, participating in the discussion. The engagement focused on Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution, particularly Article 41(f), which requires citizens to protect and preserve public property and to expose and combat the misuse and waste of public funds and property.

Students were reminded that school infrastructure, textbooks, furniture and other items provided under the Free SHS programme are public property financed from national resources. They were therefore encouraged to protect school facilities, avoid vandalism, report theft and misuse of public property, and refrain from wasting water, electricity and food.

The discussion also highlighted Article 41(k), which enjoins every citizen to protect and safeguard the environment. Students were encouraged to keep their dormitories, classrooms and school compounds clean, practise proper waste disposal, participate in communal cleaning exercises, keep gutters free from refuse, and protect trees and other vegetation.

The NCCE stressed that responsible citizenship begins with individual action and encouraged students to appreciate that their constitutional responsibilities extend beyond the classroom. Protecting public property and the environment, the Commission noted, contributes to effective teaching and learning and supports national development. The engagement formed part of the NCCE’s ongoing civic education efforts to promote responsible citizenship and deepen young people’s understanding of their constitutional duties.
