NCCE, CRCC Join National Sanitation Day to Restore Cleanliness in Cape Coast

The Central Regional Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the Central Regional Coordinating Council (CRCC), joined the National Sanitation Day exercise to clean parts of the Cape Coast Metropolis in line with the President's directive to promote environmental cleanliness and support communities affected by recent flooding.

The exercise brought together officials from government institutions, the security services, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), civil society organisations, and community volunteers, who worked together to clean major streets, markets, drains, and other public spaces.

Led by the Central Regional Director of the NCCE, Madam Mercy Essien, staff of the Commission actively participated in sweeping streets, desilting choked drains, collecting refuse, and educating residents on the importance of proper sanitation. The public was also reminded of their civic responsibility to maintain clean surroundings by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding the dumping of refuse into drains and waterways.

The sanitation exercise forms part of the Government's renewed nationwide campaign to improve environmental sanitation following the President's call for sustained action to keep communities clean. It also aims to reduce flooding and prevent outbreaks of sanitation-related diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, and malaria.

Addressing participants, officials of the Central Regional Coordinating Council, including the Regional Minister, commended the commitment shown by participating institutions and residents. They stressed that environmental cleanliness cannot be achieved through occasional cleanup exercises alone but requires continuous citizen participation and responsible attitudes toward waste management.

Reaffirming its constitutional mandate, the NCCE reminded citizens that Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution places a duty on every Ghanaian to protect and preserve the environment. The Commission therefore encouraged the public to make cleanliness a daily habit by keeping drains free of debris, properly managing household waste, and participating in community sanitation activities.

The successful exercise underscored the strong collaboration between the NCCE, the Central Regional Coordinating Council, and other stakeholders in advancing the President's vision of cleaner, healthier, and more resilient communities across Ghana.
