NCCE Adentan Marks 2026 World Environment Day with Holy Rosary R/C JHS, Adenta

Climate action took centre stage at Holy Rosary R/C Junior High School in Adenta when the Adentan Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) joined pupils and teachers to commemorate the 2026 World Environment Day.

Held on the school premises, the programme was organized under the theme “Climate Action” and the slogan “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” It formed part of efforts by the Commission to deepen environmental awareness among young people and encourage responsible citizenship in protecting the environment.

Pupils, teachers, and NCCE officials participated in the engagement, including the Adentan Municipal Director of the NCCE, Mrs. Sylvia Osei-Bonsu, Mr. Mark Baah Kumi, and Mr. Godwin Danyo. Madam Rejoyce, a teacher of the school, welcomed the NCCE team and introduced the officials to the school community.

A poetry recital by student Ellen Anim opened the programme and set a reflective tone for discussions on climate change, environmental protection and civic responsibility.

Addressing the pupils, Mrs. Osei-Bonsu sensitized them on climate change and their duty to protect the environment. She explained that Article 41(k) of the 1992 Constitution enjoins citizens to protect and safeguard the environment, making environmental care both a civic and constitutional responsibility.

Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, floods, droughts, deforestation, plastic pollution and environmental degradation were identified as major climate-related challenges affecting communities. Mrs. Osei-Bonsu noted that these issues have serious consequences for public health, livelihoods, food security and national development.

Using an interactive approach, she encouraged pupils to see climate action as a shared responsibility. Learners were urged to keep their surroundings clean at school, at home, and in their communities.

Practical steps discussed included proper waste disposal, tree planting, reduction of plastic use, and regular desilting of drains to prevent flooding. Pupils were also encouraged to become advocates for environmental protection among their peers and families.

Mrs. Osei-Bonsu further emphasized that young people have an important role to play in building climate-resilient communities. She noted that when children develop good environmental habits early, they become strong voices for clean, safe, and sustainable communities.

Civic Education Clubs were also highlighted as important platforms for promoting environmental citizenship, leadership, and peer education among students.

By the end of the programme, pupils had gained deeper knowledge of climate change, environmental stewardship and their role in promoting sustainable practices. School authorities expressed appreciation to the NCCE for the insightful engagement.

The Adentan Municipal Office of the NCCE reaffirmed its commitment to extending similar environmental education activities to other schools throughout the month of June.
