As part of activities marking the 2026 Constitution Week Celebration, the Central Gonja District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) organized an educational excursion for members of the Civic Education Clubs of Buipe Senior High School and Queen of Peace Junior High School to the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) in Buipe.
The excursion, held on Wednesday, 3rd June 2026, was aimed at exposing students to the operations of key national institutions and helping them appreciate the role such organizations play in Ghana's socio-economic development. The visit also provided learners with a practical understanding of how strategic national resources are managed and distributed to support economic activities across the country.
Upon arrival, the students were warmly received by Mr. Christian Osanebi, Terminal Operations Manager at BOST, who welcomed the team and provided an overview of the company's mission, vision, and operational activities in Buipe. He explained the critical role BOST plays in ensuring the efficient storage, transportation, and distribution of petroleum products to various parts of the country, particularly the northern sector.
During the engagement, Mr. Osanebi and Mr. Mark Aidoo Kewsi, Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Coordinator, took the students through the operational processes of the Buipe terminal and highlighted the strategic importance of the facility in Ghana's energy supply chain.
The students learned that the fuel barge operating between Akosombo and Buipe via the Volta Lake has the capacity to transport approximately 5.2 million litres of fuel per trip. They were also informed that the Buipe BOST terminal has storage tanks capable of holding up to 10 million litres of petroleum products, making it one of the key fuel storage facilities serving northern Ghana.
The resource persons further explained that the primary activities undertaken at the Buipe terminal include receiving fuel transported by barge, storing petroleum products safely in storage tanks, and discharging fuel into tanker trucks for onward distribution to various destinations across the northern part of the country.
Before the commencement of the facility tour, students and accompanying officials were taken through comprehensive safety procedures and precautionary measures. The safety briefing emphasized the importance of adhering to operational guidelines and maintaining strict safety standards within fuel storage and transportation facilities.
The guided tour provided participants with a firsthand opportunity to observe the fuel storage infrastructure and gain practical insights into the processes involved in petroleum storage and distribution. The experience helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world industrial operations.
The excursion also highlighted the importance of discipline, safety consciousness, environmental responsibility, and professionalism in the management of critical national infrastructure. Students were encouraged to pursue careers in engineering, environmental management, logistics, and other fields that contribute to national development.
Accompanying the students were Mr. Tiika Winner, Civic Education Club Patron of Buipe Senior High School, Madam Mary A. Darwua, and officials of the National Commission for Civic Education, including Mr. Suuk Y. Cletus, District Director, and Madam Zenabu Issahaku, Chief Field Officer.
The educational tour successfully broadened the students' knowledge of Ghana's petroleum distribution system and strengthened their appreciation of the role national institutions play in supporting economic growth and development. The excursion also reinforced the objectives of Constitution Week by exposing young people to practical aspects of nation-building and responsible citizenship.
