The Bono East Regional Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged students of the Civic Education Club and other organized youth groups of Anglican University College of Technology in the Nkoranza South Municipality on the Rule of Law and the Fight Against Corruption.
The engagement formed part of efforts to increase youth understanding of public accountability as a key civic value in the fight against corruption, enhance awareness of anti-corruption laws such as the Whistleblowers Act, 2006 (Act 720), and promote ethical leadership and responsible civic conduct among tertiary students.
The program was facilitated by Mr. Joseph Kwaku Yeboah, Bono East Regional Director of the NCCE, and Nana Kwadwo Mensah, Atipimhene of Tanoso, Techiman, and a retired NCCE staff member. They were supported by Ms. Afusatu Yekeen (SCEO), Mr. Louis Nelly Nyarko (CEO), Mr. Joseph Lartey (CEO), Ms. Grace Adu-Gyamfi (CEO), Ms. Duut Gillian (CEO), and Mr. Vincent Owusu (CFO).
In a PowerPoint presentation, Mr. Joseph Kwaku Yeboah took participants through topics including Conflict of Interest in Public Institution Decision-Making Processes, Influence Peddling and Abuse of Office, and the Whistleblowers Act, 2006 (Act 720). He explained the concept of conflict of interest in public institutions and highlighted practical ways of managing such situations to ensure transparency and accountability. He further elaborated on influence peddling and abuse of office, emphasizing their negative impact on public trust and good governance.
Mr. Yeboah also discussed the Whistleblowers Act, 2006 (Act 720), noting that the law provides protection for individuals who report illegal, corrupt, or improper activities in the public interest without fear of victimization.
Nana Kwadwo Mensah, Atipimhene of Tanoso, Techiman, delivered a presentation on the Rule of Law and Ethical Leadership Standards. He stressed that ethical leaders do not merely comply with legal requirements but are guided by moral values such as respect, fairness, compassion, and empathy. He further explained that while the Rule of Law provides the legal framework that guides citizens on what they must do, ethical leadership provides the moral framework that inspires individuals to do what they ought to do.
The engagement sought to instill in students a deeper appreciation of public accountability, strengthen their understanding of anti-corruption laws, and encourage ethical leadership and responsible civic participation among the youth.
The program was highly interactive, with participants contributing to discussions and asking questions on issues relating to corruption, accountability, and ethical leadership.
